As your business grows from tiny, to small, to large, the way you store the items you use becomes more and more important. While it’s OK with just a few items to have unlabeled shelves and an ad-hoc system, once your inventory grows you need to be sure that your team puts things away in the right place and knows exactly where to find things.
This is why each type of product in your inventory needs a set storage location. This defines where the item should be put away, and where your team can find it again when they need it. The location is on the product’s label, so there should be no doubt about it.
If your storage area is simple, you may not need signs or labels to direct people to the right location. But to help your team find items easily, and to check stock levels quickly, it's useful to have defined places for your Products.
Silo calls these places Locations, and allows you to set a Location for each product.
In the Inventory List on desktop, hover over the Product name to see its location.
In the mobile app, you can see the Product's location in the inventory list as standard. You can also see the location while doing a Stocktake.
On each item's label, the Preferred Location is also shown.
Setting Locations for Products in the Inventory list
You can update the Location for one or more Products in the Inventory list. Select the Products you wish to modify, and choose the Location button. Pick the new Location to which you want to assign these Products. The list of available Locations will be based on your Locations settings. See below for instructions on how to add a new Location to the list.
Setting Locations for new Products on Import
You can set a Location for a Product during the process of adding it to Silo.
Adding a single Product
Set the Location in the Product Settings page during the import process
Importing via CSV
Ensure the Location field is filled in, and that Locations are named consistently.
Setting Location Details
As an Admin, you can modify and add Locations through the Settings->Locations page.
To add a Location, click New Location and enter the name of the Location in the window that appears.
To edit a Location, click on the three-dots button on its row and choose Edit Location from the menu that appears.
To change the order in which locations are shown during stocktaking, use the drag handle to reposition a location in the sequence you want.
Sometimes you may have locations that you want to combine into one. Additionally, during the import process, you may have named the same location slightly differently, causing Silo to show two locations as one. To remedy this, select both Locations in the list, and click the Merge Locations button to merge the two. You have the option of choosing a new name for the Merged location.
